APAO welcomes new member society

The Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology is pleased to welcome the Brunei Ophthalmology Society as the newest associate national member of APAO.
BOS is currently under the leadership of president Dr. Helena Hurairah, who will also represent the society on the APAO Council. Below, Dr. Hurairah has provided a summary of her society’s history and aims:
“The Brunei Ophthalmology Society was established in April 2019 following the recognition for the need of the establishment of a registered body to unify ophthalmic care providers, allied health professionals, and related government and nongovernment organizations involved in supporting individuals with low vision needs. The society is a strong advocate of ensuring that all individuals in the country have universal access to good vision care and treatment.
“The main motto of the Brunei Ophthalmology Society is to ‘innovate, advocate, collaborate, educate.’
“‘Innovate’ is to constantly keep up with the latest advances in ophthalmology and vision sciences. BOS aims to introduce new ideas and methods in its practice to provide the best evidence-based practice and care.
“In terms of ‘advocate,’ members of BOS are advocates for the prevention of all causes of treatable visual impairment. They act on behalf of their patients to ensure patients have optimal access to treatment.
“‘Collaborate’ is to work jointly with one another, national and international organizations, to uphold and improve upon the practice of ophthalmology and vision sciences in Brunei Darussalam.
“‘Educate’ is to provide ophthalmic education for the ophthalmic community, allied health professional, nurses and the general public.”

APVRS 2019 Congress advance registration deadline
Advance registration rates for the 13th Asia-Pacific Vitreo-retina Society Congress in Shanghai, China, will close on Nov. 10. Registration of more than five delegates is encouraged to complete and return the group registration form to the APVRS secretariat at registration@apvrs.org by the above deadline.
The APVRS 2019 Congress will be held at National Exhibition and Convention Center, Shanghai, Nov. 22-24. The Congress will bring together professionals with a focus on the vitreoretinal field.

APSPOS-RANZCO-AAPOS joint meeting
The Asia-Pacific Strabismus and Paediatric Ophthalmology Society, a subspecialty member of the APAO, will hold its 2nd meeting Nov. 7-8 in Sydney, in conjunction with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, one of the APAO national members, and the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.
The meeting will feature some of the most important and innovative programs in pediatric ophthalmology in 2019. Graduates of APAO Leadership Development Program are also invited to participate in RANZCO’s International Development Workshop, “Tackling Retinal Disease in Low Resource Settings,” which will take place on day 1.
On day 2 of the joint meeting, RANZCO will commence its 51st Annual Scientific Congress through Nov. 12. The complete program outline can be found here.
As for the meeting venue, the International Convention Centre Sydney is located in the heart of Sydney, at the Darling Harbour on Cockle Bay. It is easily accessible by public transport, including light rail, ferry and train, and is only a 10-minute walk from central and town hall train stations.
