Tips to improve quality of life in low vision population

The American Academy of Ophthalmology is offering tips to help older populations stay safe and independent in their homes despite low vision.

With the number of older Americans with low vision expected to double in coming years, the AAO recommends simple changes to help them live better lives, according to a press release.

Improving contrast around the home by using dark place mats under white place settings, rugs that are contrasting colors to the floor, and kitchen towels and cutting boards that contrast with the countertop, as well as using contrasting colored tape along the edges of rugs, steps and lamp shades, is one way to allow those with low vision to live in their homes safely and independently, the release said.

In addition, it is helpful to reduce clutter, keep an organized home, and improve lighting in staircases, hallways and kitchens.

“The prospect of being unable to drive, read or see loved one’s faces is frightening and can lead some people to withdraw from life,” John D. Shepherd, MD, a clinical spokesperson for the AAO, said in the release. “While there isn’t one strategy or tool that works for every person, vision rehabilitation offers hope. It can help people stay in their homes and keep doing the things they love to do.”
