PARIS — Santen announced the European launch of its novel xact Mono-EDoF IOL at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting here.
“It has the optical quality of a monofocal with the intermediate range of vision of an extended depth of focus lens,” Mark Packer, MD, told Healio.com/OSN.
Made of hydrophobic acrylic material, the xact Mono-EDoF IOL is CE marked as a monofocal lens and meets ISO standards as a monofocal, but it also has four diffractive rings.
“There’s no other lens that has a diffractive element that is also technically a monofocal,” Packer said.
Monofocal IOLs must have a single peak on the modulation transfer function curve, but this lens has a single broad peak that gives some intermediate range vision, Packer said.
“It’s really no different than a monofocal in terms of halo and glare, but it has better intermediate range of vision than a monofocal,” Packer said. “We measured at 50 cm, 60 cm and 70 cm, and at 70 cm visual acuity is about 20/25. At 60 cm, it is about 20/30 visual acuity. So very good intermediate range vision.” – by Patricia Nale, ELS
Disclosure: Packer reports he is medical monitor for the clinical studies of the xact Mono-EDoF IOL.
