Seenu Hariprasad, MD, receives ASRS teaching, mentorship award

Seenu M. Hariprasad, MD, was presented with the Crystal Apple Award by the ASRS Early Career Section for excellence in teaching and mentorship.

Hariprasad is the chief of the vitreoretinal service, director of clinical research, and director of fellowship in diseases and surgery of the retina, macula and vitreous at the University of Chicago Medicine & Biological Sciences. His clinical research has contributed to the understanding and use of new medications to treat a variety of vitreoretinal disorders, the American Society of Retina Specialists said in a press release.

“Sometimes we wake up in the morning and wonder if we are on the right path, personally and professionally. This award is reinforcement that I am on the right professional path and gives me the validation to keep doing what I am doing,” Hariprasad told Healio.com/OSN. “I am very humbled to be a part of a family of only 20 others who have received this award in the past.”

The award, which was presented to Hariprasad at the ASRS meeting in July, is given to ASRS members who have worked to advance the education and professional development of young vitreoretinal specialists.

“Mentorship is the way knowledge and skills are passed down from generation to generation since the beginning of time. Retina is one specialty where mentorship is so important for various reasons,” Hariprasad said. “Throughout my career, at every stage, I had such amazing mentors. Now it is my turn to pay it forward. By recognizing mentorship, the ASRS is acknowledging the importance of this tried and true method of teaching in our subspecialty and will encourage the next generation to focus on education of those that follow them.” – by Rebecca L.
