Wills Eye’s Jerry Shields, MD, receives Howe Medal

Jerry A. Shields , MD, has received the 2019 Lucien Howe Medal from the American Ophthalmological Society for his distinguished service throughout his career, Wills Eye Hospital announced in a press release.
Shields, who is founder and director emeritus of the Wills Eye Hospital Ocular Oncology Service and professor of ophthalmology at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, has authored more than 1,800 scientific publications, nearly 20 textbooks and presented 1,500 scientific lectures, the release said.
“Jerry has been a revered leader in the field of ocular oncology and ophthalmology. His contributions are legion. He has taught and trained generations of clinicians, been at the forefront of life-saving treatments and cures in eye cancer and has led research efforts that have defined new options in care and best practices in oncology,” Wills Eye Hospital Ophthalmologist-in-Chief and William Tasman, MD, Endowed Chair Julia A .Haller, MD, said.
Shields received the Howe Medal at the annual AOS meeting in White Sulpher Springs, Virginia.
