SAN DIEGO — Following a year of transition, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery is looking forward to continuing its work in education, advocacy and philanthropy.
Incoming ASCRS President Nick Mamalis, MD, began his term at the organization’s annual meeting, taking over from Thomas W. Samuelson, MD. Mamalis previously served as vice president for ASCRS.
In the meeting’s opening ceremonies, Mamalis said that he wanted to keep a focus on these important aspects of the Society through his presidential term.
“As an educator, the primary objective is to continue ASCRS’s endeavors. I really want to continue the great work that Tom has done because ASCRS is really the society where anterior segment surgeons come for an education,” he said.
ASCRS is a place for anterior segment surgeons, regardless of subspecialty or volume of practice, to gain skills and keep up with surgical trends, Mamalis added.
“Wherever you are on the spectrum of anterior segment surgery, ASCRS is the society for you,” he said.
In addition, the organization’s commitment to advocacy for both surgeons and patients, and the work done by its foundation both locally and worldwide, are important to maintain, he said.
“ASCRS has a very large role in looking out for our particular interests,” he said.- by Rebecca L. Forand
