A clinical trial of the Preceyes Surgical System, a robotic surgery assistant, has begun at Rotterdam Eye Hospital for use during epiretinal membrane peels, the company announced in a press release.

The trial will determine if the system can perform parts of the ERM procedure at least as safely as a human surgeon, and if it can perform the peel more precisely and reproducibly, the release said.

A randomized, prospective, open-label, surgical intervention study will compare manual surgery to robotic-assisted surgery. Light pipe positioning, dye staining and removal, ERM flap initiation with a pick, ERM grasping and peeling with forceps, and fluid and gas exchange are all steps that will be assisted by the robotic system

Surgeons consider “the use of the forceps fully operated by the robot with multiple grabs to peel a membrane as the most impressive part of the operation,” Marc de Smet, MD, Preceyes’ Chief Medical Officer said.
