FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A subanalysis of the DISCOVER study showed intraoperative OCT integration with 3-D digital surgical visualization is feasible and posed ergonomic and surgical visualization efficiency advantages over conventional microscope systems, according to a speaker here.

“The large screen-based visualization of the OCT data stream minimized the need for accessory screen utilization,” Natalia Figueiredo, MD, said at the Retina World Congress.

Figueiredo and colleagues compared surgical visualization efficiencies, ergonomics and membrane peel time between intraoperative OCT integration with 3-D surgical visualization and conventional microscope systems in the 3-year DISCOVER study. The researchers compared 72 conventional system procedures and 79 digitally assisted system procedures.

Surgeons using conventional systems experienced a mean peel time of 8.7 minutes compared with 11.8 minutes for digitally assisted systems, a statistically significant difference; however, 72.5% of conventional procedures offered an excellent quality of widefield view compared with 79% of digitally assisted procedures, also a statistically significant difference, Figueiredo said.

Ergonomic results showed 34% of surgeons using conventional systems reported back discomfort and 32% reported headaches compared with, respectively, 2% and 4% of surgeons using the digitally assisted systems.

“What is next? Improved OCT quality and improved vitrectomy parameters into the surgical field,” Figueiredo said. – by Robert Linnehan
