Inaugural Cornea360° meeting slated for April

Ophthalmologists and cornea specialists will gather to collaborate with peers, innovators and industry leaders at the inaugural Cornea360° meeting April 4 to 6 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The 3-day meeting is jointly sponsored by CEDARS/ASPENS, APEX and the Cornea Society.
“Three societies that all focus on cornea and anterior segment disease have come together to put on this groundbreaking meeting,” Kenneth A. Beckman, MD, FACS, founder and past president of CEDARS/ASPENS, told Healio.com/OSN. “We all have been wanting this type of meeting for years, and now it is here.”
Topics on the agenda delve into controversies and cutting-edge developments in the fields of cornea, ocular surface and anterior segment disease, with an emphasis on sending attendees back to the clinic with information that will make a difference in their practice right away.
Healio: What are the objectives of Cornea360°?
Beckman: The goal is to provide a forum for cornea specialists and ophthalmologists interested in cornea to meet and discuss high-level cornea topics. This will be a cornea-only meeting focusing on the types of topics that are not typically discussed in this much depth at general meetings.
Healio: What unique features can be expected at the meeting?
Beckman: Unlike other cornea meetings, such as Cornea Day at the American Academy of Ophthalmology or American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meetings, this will be a stand-alone meeting. Attendees will not be distracted trying to attend multiple events. The size of the meeting will be smaller and more intimate. The format will be interactive, with audience member participation. The presentations will be in panel discussion format, not just didactic lectures, to allow for multiple opinions and lively debates.
Healio: Who should attend Cornea360°?
Beckman: Anyone interested in cornea: cornea specialists, fellows and general ophthalmologists who treat corneal conditions.
Healio: What makes this meeting stand out?
Beckman: This meeting is all cornea all day. The topics discussed will be more advanced and in depth than what is typically discussed at other meetings. The faculty and attendees will all be in one place with plenty of time for one-on-one interaction, networking and consultation.
Healio: Anything else?
Beckman: Cornea specialists have been asking for a cornea-only meeting, like they have in retina and glaucoma, for years. I can’t think of a better way for those interested in cornea to meet and discuss high-level cornea issues that they can bring back to their practice and affect the way they practice right away. I am excited and honored to be invited to the faculty of Cornea360°, the first stand-alone meeting tailored to the needs of corneal specialists. As a long-standing member of APEX, a current board member of the Cornea Society and a founding member of CEDARS/ASPENS, I am especially proud that these three groups have created a meeting dedicated to the most up-to-date, clinically relevant knowledge of corneal science, disease and therapies, both medical and surgical. Cornea360° will emphasize clinically useful knowledge via an interactive and free-flowing exchange between the audience and faculty. Forget about the staid and formal formats of meetings past. Think of this as a live Google Hangout with your closest cornea colleagues.
My presentation highlights the cutting-edge nature of this meeting. I have been asked to speak about pearls for optimizing the cross-linking procedure. Cross-linking has, over the past several years, come to the forefront in the treatment of keratoconus, and there has been no shortage of controversy in terms of the best approaches to cross-linking. This topic is vitally important for corneal specialists, both in the U.S. and abroad, as we strive to make this procedure more streamlined and accessible for all of our keratoconus patients. I look forward to this meeting as it will allow me to connect with renowned corneal specialists from around the world and discuss ideas such as these, which will ultimately help me be the best corneal specialist that I can be.
