New preloaded trifocal IOL has good results, high patient satisfaction

ATHENS, Greece — A new trifocal IOL showed ease of implantation, good results at all distances and high patient satisfaction in a study.

The RayOne trifocal IOL (Rayner) uses the same platform of other Rayner lenses, with a square edge and a proven design for predictable unfolding and optimal centration.

“An added benefit is that it is preloaded. We only have to put the viscoelastic into the cartridge, lock it and implant the lens into the eye. It is very comfortable for surgeons and patients, as it shortens the usual operating time by at least 2 minutes,” Ewa Mrukwa-Kominek, MD, said at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons Winter Meeting.

The optical design provides a smooth progression of lens powers, with an even distribution of light across near, intermediate and distance vision.

“The light is allocated by 52% at distance, 22% at intermediate and 26% at near, which reduces light loss to only 11%,” Mrukwa-Kominek said.

In a study performed at her clinic, 16 cataract surgery patients were bilaterally implanted with the RayOne IOL. The follow-up is currently 6 months.

Mean uncorrected distance visual acuity improved from 20/60 to 20/20, and mean uncorrected near acuity improved significantly. At intermediate, 15 patients were able to read J2. Contrast sensitivity also improved significantly in all light conditions.

Vision-related quality of life and patient satisfaction were assessed with the VF-14 questionnaire, consisting of 18 questions covering 14 aspects of visual function.

“The questionnaire showed improvements on all parameters, and patient satisfaction was much higher than before surgery,” Mrukwa-Kominek said. by Michela Cimberle
