Laser vision correction procedure volume increased in 2018

In 2018, laser vision correction procedure volume increased in the U.S. for the third year in a row, according to the Refractive Surgery Council.
Procedure volume increased by 6.2% from 2017, with more than 843,000 procedures performed. This continues a 3-year upward trend in procedures such as LASIK, PRK and small incision lenticule extraction, according to a press release.
The Refractive Surgery Council was founded in 2010 and supports educational efforts to ensure public awareness and understanding of the benefits of laser vision correction procedures.
“Our reporting shows an average year-over-year growth of 7.5% over the past 3 years, reflecting strengthening consumer demand for laser vision correction and broad confidence that it is safe and effective. With the enormous need for vision correction among today’s adult populations and the widespread availability of advanced laser vision correction technologies, we foresee a return to annual procedure volumes in excess of 1 million,” RSC Chairman Jim Wachtman said in the release.
