Thank you for bringing the topic of practice embezzlement to the forefront in the Ocular Surgery News cover story in the Nov. 25, 2018, issue. We agree that physician involvement in practice management is one key to reducing the risk of this problem. We would all like to have the tools to minimize the potential for embezzlement.
It was noted in the article that if business classes were offered at ophthalmic professional society annual meetings, they would be a valuable resource for ophthalmologists. The American Academy of Ophthalmology offers many business courses and practice management topics at its annual meeting, including 90 courses offered by the Academy’s practice management division, the American Academy of Ophthalmic Executives, at the annual meeting this past October. All of these courses are available to ophthalmologists attending the meeting. In addition to the annual meeting, the AAO is offering the second annual Ophthalmology Business Summit, a weekend course on March 23-24, 2019, in Chicago, which is devoted to helping physicians and administrators manage the complexities of running a practice. We anticipate a good return on investment for those attending the meeting.
