The second Retina World Congress will take place in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, March 21 to 24, bringing retina specialists from across the globe together to interact and learn from each other.
It will include case studies, panels, surgical videos and clinical trial updates, as well as interactive sessions and a reception. Topics to be covered during the 4-day meeting include retinal diseases, macular surgery, pediatric surgery, gene therapy, diabetic vitrectomy and ocular oncology.
Retina World Congress President Rishi P. Singh, MD, talked with Healio.com/OSN about the highlights of the upcoming meeting.
What are the objectives of the Retina World Congress?
In a time of rapid retina innovation and change, Retina World Congress recognized the need for an international forum for scientific dialogue and professional education. Our objective is to foster more collaboration between national and regional societies and provide a single focal point for information exchange for the global retina community.
What new features can be expected at the 2019 meeting?
The RWC 2019 program continues to provide insight from more than 150 leading retina specialists from around the globe. In addition to increased accredited professional education courses, expert panel discussions and industry exhibits, we are debuting RWC Unplugged in 2019. A non-CME component, RWC Unplugged offers a unique opportunity to learn, share and discuss controversial topics in retina with industry experts and clinical leaders with no scripts or industry commercials. Taking the lead with this inaugural program are Pravin Dugel, MD, Peter Kaiser, MD, and Baruch Kuppermann, MD, PhD. Together, the RWC 2019 and RWC Unplugged offer opportunities to expand knowledge, gain global exposure and network with experts.

I have been thrilled to be part of the Retina World Congress since its inception as one of its founders, an executive committee member and now president-elect. I am very pleased that the meeting had a wonderfully successful start 2 years ago and continues to grow into the meeting we originally envisioned. Our goal has always been to make RWC a meeting “created by the world, for the world,” and we have succeeded by forming a large coalition of the leading 40 international, regional and national retina societies from around the world to actively and collectively create a program that highlights the most advanced concepts and techniques from around the world and emphasizes the sharing of knowledge across the globe. Unlike any society meeting, the voices of the international community have been integral to the creation of the RWC meeting content rather than being relegated to a short invited guest symposium. This meeting is important to the entire retina community as it represents the collective thought and input of the international community on the many aspects of blinding disease that we all fight.
I will be chairing several sessions on surgical retina and will speak on the management of hypotony in eyes with treated proliferative vitreoretinopathy — a problem that has historically been quite challenging but may now be somewhat addressable.
Many friends, colleagues and industry professionals will converge on beautiful Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at the location of many past ARVO meetings, and I could not be more excited to participate in this one-of-a-kind meeting. I hope many in our community will join me for this great experience and share in the learning and fun.
