Alcon acquires Tear Film Innovations
Tear Film Innovations, the manufacturer of the iLux device, has been acquired by Alcon, according to a press release.
The iLux device is used by eye care professionals to treat meibomian gland dysfunction. It uses disposable silicone pads to warm the eyelids to address blocked meibomian glands through the application of light-based heating, the release said.
“With the acquisition of Tear Film, we’re excited to bring this latest innovation to treat the millions of people around the world who suffer from dry eye,” Andy Pawson, Alcon president and general manager, global vision care franchise, said in the release. “Alcon remains committed to improving the lives of patients around the world through innovative technologies like the iLux device to address significant unmet needs in eye care.”
The FDA granted the iLux 510(k) clearance in December 2017. It is available in the United States and Canada, with an expansion to other countries planned for 2019.
Financial terms of the deal were not released.
