Johnson & Johnson Vision, the Singapore National Eye Centre and the Singapore Eye Research Institute have announced a partnership to research the causes, prevention and treatment of myopia, according to a press release.

The $26.35 million research collaboration will focus on developing predictive tools to identify high-risk individuals, conduct research on myopia’s underlying mechanisms, and develop and progress therapies, the release said.

“The incidence of myopia is increasing at an alarming rate around the world, and if left unchecked, the human and financial toll could skyrocket in the coming decades, especially in Asia,” Paul Stoffels, MD, Johnson & Johnson vice chairman of the executive committee and chief scientific officer, said in the release.

Johnson & Johnson will make a $15.78 million investment in the collaboration, with Singapore Eye Research Institute investing $10.57 million.

“Documented increases in myopia, especially among young people, are a serious concern, and if we can understand the underlying mechanisms that are contributing to its rapid rise, we can work to tackle the problem at its roots,” Tin Aung, MBBS, N/MEd (Ophth), FRCS (Ed), FRCOphth, FAMS, PhD, executive director of Singapore Eye Research Institute, said in the release.
