CHICAGO — Cataract patients implanted with a small-aperture IC-8 IOL in one or both eyes reported excellent monocular and binocular vision, as well as high patient satisfaction 4 years postoperatively, according to a speaker.

“The mechanism is extended depth of focus using small aperture optics. We achieved good monocular and binocular vision outcomes. Targeting patients to slightly myopia gives them an additional near, but even if they’re slightly myopic, the small aperture makes their distance vision good. They benefit both ways if you target them with slight myopia,” Robert Edward T. Ang, MD, said at the Refractive Surgery Subspecialty Day preceding the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting.

Researchers evaluated 12 subjects who were implanted contralaterally with an AcuFocus IC-8 IOL and an aspheric monofocal IOL in the fellow eye and 10 patients implanted bilaterally with an IC-8 IOL. Monocular and binocular uncorrected near, intermediate and distance visual acuities, plus patient satisfaction, were compared 4 years postoperatively.

Patients implanted bilaterally with the small-aperture IOL achieved 0.03 log MAR, 0.02 log MAR and 0.10 log MAR mean uncorrected distance visual acuity, uncorrected intermediate visual acuity and uncorrected near visual acuity, respectively. Results for the contralaterally implanted patients were very similar, Ang said.

At 48-months, patients reported low visual symptom scores for glare, halos and night vision, he said.

“It gives us the confidence to keep using the IC-8,” Ang said. – by Robert Linnehan
