Zeiss introduces TK for IOLMaster 700, ANGI network at AAO

CHICAGO — Carl Zeiss Meditec announced the U.S. launch of TK for IOLMaster 700, which allows surgeons to make precise measurements of the posterior corneal surface, at a press briefing here.
The technology is compatible with standard formulas and existing workflows and includes two new Barrett formulas incorporating the new total keratometry (TK) values.
In the glaucoma space, Angelo Rago, global head ophthalmic diagnostics, introduced the Advanced Nerve and Glaucoma Imaging (ANGI) network. The network fosters collaboration between researchers in the fields of neuro-ophthalmology and glaucoma.
“We’ve got doctors and researchers from different countries working in one community all together using Zeiss technology. This technology has been identified by many to be the best with respect to image quality,” he said.
In the refractive space, the company recently received FDA approval for the expanded indication of treating myopia with astigmatism.
John F. Doane, MD, presented results from his U.S. SMILE spherocylindrical study. Doane and colleagues treated one eye with SMILE and another with LASIK, both with spherical and astigmatic treatments. The patients were followed for 12 months and no retreatments were allowed.
“When you get to 6 months and 12 months, the results are just as good as what we have with LASIK…at 6 months, 99% of the eyes were 20/40 or better and 84% were 20/20 or better. Excellent outcomes,” Doane said.
More than 90% of the eyes were within plus or minus 0.5 D from the target with the SMILE technique, equal to or better than what is required for LASIK, he said. – by Robert Linnehan
