ICD-10 additions affect ophthalmology diagnosis codes

Distinction between upper and lower eyelids of right and left eyes has been added to a number of malignant and benign neoplasm ICD-10 codes, according to the American Society of Ophthalmic Administrators, which released a list of fiscal year 2019 code changes that affect ophthalmology.

These additions, which include the canthus, affect the following codes:

C43, malignant melanoma of skin;

C44, other and unspecified malignant neoplasm of skin;

C4A, Merkel cell carcinoma;

D03, melanoma in situ;

D04, carcinoma in situ of skin;

D22, melanocytic nevi; and

D23, other benign neoplasms of skin.

Codes distinguishing right, left, bilateral and unspecified clonic hemifacial spasm have been added under code G51, facial nerve disorders.

For H01 codes concerning other inflammation of eyelid and H02 codes concerning other disorders of eyelid, distinctions have been added for right, left and bilateral eye involvement, as well as for upper and lower lid involvement.

Under code H10.82, rosacea conjunctivitis, new codes for right eye, left eye, bilateral and unspecified rosacea conjunctivitis have been added.

Under code H57.81, new codes for right, left, bilateral and unspecified brow ptosis have been added.

A new code, H57.89, allows for other specified disorders of eye and adnexa.

The changes were released by the CMS and take effect Oct. 1, 2018.
