Bascom Palmer Eye Institute has been named as the best ophthalmology hospital in the country for the 15th consecutive year by U.S. News & World Report.

The publication’s annual list has been led by Bascom Palmer 17 times in its 29-year history.

“Having ophthalmologists from around the country recognize Bascom Palmer as the best in the nation once again is a great tribute to our physicians, their expertise and their commitment to our patients,” Eduardo C. Alfonso, MD, director of Bascom Palmer, said in a press release from the institute.

The Miami-based institution was one of the first to perform successful gene therapy surgery for Leber congenital amaurosis in March.

Second place went to Philadelphia’s Wills Eye Hospital, which also ranked as No. 1 in a Doximity poll of the best ophthalmology residency programs in the country, according to a Wills Eye press release.

“What we can do on behalf of our patients drives every decision we make at Wills Eye Hospital,” Ophthalmologist-in-Chief Julia A. Haller, MD, said in the release. “It is extremely gratifying to be heralded year after year by our physician peers.”

U.S. News & World Report compares more than 4,500 medical centers across the county each year for its best hospitals report, which is compiled to help patients and doctors make informed decisions about where to receive care, according to a press release from the publication.
