Patients with low to moderate myopic astigmatism who underwent transepithelial PRK experienced safe, predictable outcomes, according to a study.
The retrospective study included 47 eyes of 36 patients with low to moderate myopic astigmatism who underwent transepithelial PRK. The eyes had preoperative cylinder ranging from –0.75 D to –2.25 D and myopia ranging from –1.5 D to –5.75 D.
Researchers evaluated uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), manifest refractive cylinder and sphere before surgery and at 6 months after surgery.
At 6 months, all eyes had 20/20 or better UDVA, and no eyes lost two or more lines of CDVA.
The researchers reported 63.8% of the eyes had residual refractive cylinder of 0.25 D or less, and 93.6% had 0.5 D or less. Additionally, 80.9% of eyes had an error of angle of 10° or less and 95.7% were within 15°. – by Robert Linnehan
