The ninth annual Cataract Surgery: Telling It Like It Is meeting will provide top-quality, uncensored, cutting-edge education to ophthalmologists unrestricted by current CME guidelines.
The meeting will be held Feb. 6-10, 2019, at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
Uncensored education
The meeting will feature more than 40 faculty members, comprised of some of the most talented ophthalmologists from around the world. These teachers will provide attendees with instructional materials at introductory, intermediate and advanced levels to ensure ophthalmologists at every stage are able to “quench their thirst and fill their appetite” for new information in every field relating to cataract surgery, Robert H. Osher, MD, program director, professor of ophthalmology and medical director emeritus of the Cincinnati Eye Institute, told Ocular Surgery News.
“Our mission is clear: We want to make every single attendee depart a more confident and knowledgeable surgeon. When we get into a comfort zone with what we do, we’re reluctant to step outside that secure zone and embrace new technology. This meeting was meant to give a tremendous amount of clinically useful information that can be adapted the following week in surgery. Our mission is to make sure that everyone is armed with a ton of new information that they can use immediately in their practice,” Osher said.
Content and education at the annual meeting are unrestricted by CME guidelines. Faculty members, which include Ike K. Ahmed, MD, FRCSC, Warren E. Hill, MD, Richard Mackool, MD, Michael Snyder, MD, Samuel Masket, MD, Lisa Arbisser, MD, and other experts, are able to speak openly and honestly about anything relating to cataract surgery they feel is important, Osher said.

The agenda
This year’s meeting will feature keynote addresses from OSN Chief Medical Editor Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, OSN Cataract Surgery Board Member David F. Chang, MD, and Brian Little, FRCS, FRCOphth, FHEA, of Moorfields Eye Hospital, recently voted by colleagues as the No. 1 cataract surgeon in the United Kingdom, Osher said.
The meeting will also include 30 wet labs to allow attendees to get hands-on training in new cataract, refractive and glaucoma technologies, procedures and surgery devices.
The first part of the meeting will be dedicated to subspecialties, with updates on oculoplastics, neuro-ophthalmology, ocular oncology, retina, refractive, glaucoma and uveitis. The second and third days will focus on new technologies and techniques in cataract surgery, such as intrascleral haptic fixation, prosthetic iris implantation, variations of optic capture and pars plana vitrectomy for the cataract surgeon. The fourth day will focus on complication management and the final day on optimal IOL selection for every tough situation.
“We also have a challenging cases video symposium, showdowns, 3-D surgery, managing refractive surprises and an evening for young ophthalmologists where they can be with their colleagues and peers to ask the faculty anything they want. The entire agenda is very special,” Osher said.
The meeting has grown every year over the past 8 years, Osher explained, with the inaugural meeting hosting just about 300 attendees. Last year, 600-plus ophthalmologists and 113 exhibitors attended the meeting, he said.
“It’s grown from a faculty of six to a faculty of 40, and we have added so many new topics and wet labs. Every year we have also expanded the subspecialties and scheduled more and more audience participation. It’s been a dramatic evolution,” Osher said.
Registration for the event is open. On-site registration will be available, but preregistration is encouraged, Osher said.
