Issue: July 2018

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Prof. Por Tying Hung, a great leader of ophthalmology in Taiwan who made a significant impact on eye care in the Asia-Pacific region.

Por Tying Hung

For his immense contributions toward eye care, teaching and research, particularly in the field of glaucoma, Prof. Hung was recognized with the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Distinguished Service Award in 1987. Prof. Hung was also Congress President of the APAO 2001 Congress in Taiwan.

Together with Prof. Yoshiaki Kitazawa and Prof. Arthur Lim, Prof. Hung founded the Asia-Oceanic Glaucoma Society. This organization later combined with the South East Asia Glaucoma Interest Group and the Asian Angle Closure Glaucoma Club to form the Asia-Pacific Glaucoma Society, one of APAO’s first subspecialty member societies.

Prof. Hung graduated from the Medical College of Taiwan University in 1959. Over a period of 35 years at National Taiwan University Hospital and Taiwan University, he was a resident, full-time attending, instructor, associate professor, professor, and then chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology (1977-1983) and deputy director of the hospital (1983-1992). He spent time at Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins University (1967-1968) and was a National Institutes of Health Fogarty Fellow at New York Medical College (1974-1976). He was a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Beginning in 1975, Prof. Hung served the Ophthalmological Society of Taiwan in various roles, including president, secretary general, trustee and executive member of the board of trustees. He founded the Taiwan Agency for Prevention of Blindness and Taiwan Medical Society for Refraction and Optometry, both in 2002. His academic interests were broad but mainly focused on glaucoma and related fields, with more than 300 publications.

Prof. Hung was a member of the Glaucoma Society of the International Congress of Ophthalmology and an editorial board member of the Journal of Ocular Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Journal of Glaucoma and International Glaucoma Review. He was chief editor of the Asian Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology and president of the Civil Medical Publisher of Taiwan University Hospital. In 2011, he joined the editorial board of Glaucoma Management.

Prof. Hung passed away peacefully at the age of 84.
