OCTANe’s Ophthalmology Technology Summit, which aims to bring together ophthalmology experts and entrepreneurs to discuss technology and business opportunities, grew by 35% this year, with more than 400 people in attendance, according to a press release.
The meeting was chaired by Jim Mazzo, global president of ophthalmic devices at Carl Zeiss Meditec, OSN Cataract Surgery Section Editor John A. Hovanesian, MD, FACS, OSN Cornea/External Disease Section Editor Elizabeth Yeu, MD, and Ehsan Sadri, MD, FACS, of Atlantis Eyecare in California, and featured panels on innovation, business and practice management.
“To see this tremendous growth in innovation during the past 5 years is exciting. Growth is not only coming from these ophthalmology companies, but also from venture capital and private equity as well as physicians,” Mazzo said in the release.
LaunchPad SBDC presentations, in which companies highlighted innovative ideas and projects in ophthalmology, were a new addition to the meeting in 2018. Allegro Ophthalmics won the Launchpad SBDC award for its presentation regarding integrin peptide therapy as the next-generation pharmaceutical category for diabetic macular edema treatment, the release said.
Allergan founder Gavin S. Herbert received the Roger F. Steinert, MD, Honorary Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognizes leadership and contribution to the industry.
In 2019, the Ophthalmology Technology Summit will be held June 28 at the Fashion Island Hotel in Newport Beach, California.
