Biometric measurements led to more accurate IOL power calculations

The use of an optical biometer for biometric measurements led to accurate IOL power calculations for several IOL power formulas.

The prospective interventional multicenter study included 118 eyes of patients undergoing cataract surgery. Researchers evaluated results of IOL power calculations using different corneal power measurements provided by an optical biometer combined with a Scheimpflug analyzer and Placido disc topographer. The formulas used were Barrett Universal II, Haigis, Holladay 1, SRK/T and Hoffer Q. Additionally, simulated keratometry and total corneal power were used to calculate the corneal power.

“Simulated keratometry and total corneal power enable us to calculate the IOL power with similar accuracy, on condition that constant optimization is performed for each method of measuring corneal power,” Giacomo Savini, MD, lead author of the study, told Healio.com/OSN.

Using the Scheimpflug-Placido optical biometer, researchers accurately calculated the IOL power in eyes having cataract surgery. The percentage of eyes with a prediction error of ±0.5 D or less was between 72.03% and 84%. Using simulated keratometry, slightly better outcomes were achieved with a median absolute error between 0.22 D and 0.29 D.
