MILAN — Integration of leading technologies significantly improves performance during cataract surgery, saving time in the OR and improving efficiency in the preoperative stages.

Here at the OSN Italy meeting, Rolando Toyos, MD, showed in a study that 3 full minutes of surgical time were saved by using the Zeiss surgical system, integrating the IOLMaster 700 and the Opmi Lumera T microscope with the Callisto software.

“One of the big assets of this system is integration. The three parts of the system work as one. All the data from the IOLMaster are transferred onto the surgical screen and then directly to the Lumera microscope,” Toyos said.

In addition, the IOLMaster 700 with swept-source biometry integrates optical biometry with OCT technology.

“Even with white cataract you have a 99% penetration across the entire length of the eye. Irregularities such as poor fixation and crystalline lens tilt or decentration can be detected, with an imaging speed of 2,000 scans per second,” Toyos said.

A major advantage of the system is that it provides markerless toric IOL alignment by measuring the astigmatic axis relative to eye position using small blood vessels on the eye as landmarks.

“Here is where we save those 3 minutes in the OR. We are able to implant toric lenses without having to mark the eye, and we are able to position them perfectly without any problem and preparation,” he said.

The reference image of the IOLMaster is aligned with the image of the microscope during surgery, and this can assist in performing the incision and the capsulorrhexis.

“We superimpose the exact shape and size of the rhexis through the microscope onto the cornea, and this guides us to make a perfect CCC as much as if we were using a femtolaser,” Toyos said. – by Michela Cimberle
