Multiburst mode on Stellaris phaco system advantageous for early postoperative outcomes

WASHINGTON — Patients who have undergone femtosecond laser-assisted nuclear fragmentation and capsulotomy with a phaco system on multiburst mode experienced positive early postoperative outcomes, according to a speaker here.
“Multiburst modality on a Stellaris vision enhancement phaco system (Bausch + Lomb) has shown a clear overall advantage when used in combination with femto pre-softening at the different grades of cataract staging based on the LOCS III scale,” Mitchell A. Jackson, MD, said at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery annual meeting.
The retrospective, two-armed, single-surgeon study included 322 eyes, of which 229 eyes were femtosecond treated and 93 eyes were not pre-softened with a laser, he said.
One day postoperatively, patients in the femtosecond group had an average uncorrected visual acuity about three lines better than patients in the non-femto group. Additionally, patients in the femtosecond group had a 16% lower corneal edema grade than the non-femto group, but the different was not statistically significant, Jackson said.
“Fluid dynamics revealed moderate improvements when femto laser was employed,” he said. – by Robert Linnehan
