WASHINGTON — Vision-related quality of life and subjective vision satisfaction scores increased after bilateral wavefront-guided LASIK surgery, according to a paper presented here.
The prospective cohort study of 42 patients who underwent wavefront-guided LASIK between April 2014 and February 2016 evaluated patient-reported vision-related quality of life factors through 1 year using the Refractive Status and Vision Profile (RSVP) questionnaire.
“Wavefront-guided LASIK appears to be effective in improving not only objective metrics of vision, but also some self-reported vision-related quality of life measures and patient satisfaction up to 1 year postoperatively,” Stephanie P. Chen said. Chen co-authored the presentation with Edward E. Manche, MD.
Only 5% of patients reported being satisfied with their uncorrected vision before surgery, with 71.4% reporting satisfaction with correction. The uncorrected satisfaction rate rose to 83.1% at 1 month postoperatively and 88.1% at 1 year postoperatively.
“The mean total RSVP score had decreased significantly from 30.9 points preoperatively to 20.7 points postoperatively without correction,” Chen said.
In addition, quality of life subscales including concern, expectations, physical and social functioning, and driving also showed improvement. – by Rebecca L. Forand
