New ophthalmology chair named at Keck School of Medicine

Narsing Rao, MD, has been named as the new chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at Keck School of Medicine of USC, according to a press release.

An expert on uveitis and ophthalmic pathology, including ophthalmic inflammatory and infectious diseases, Rao joined the Keck School faculty in 1983, the release said.

“Dr. Rao’s research achievements have placed him at the top of his specialty,” Laura Mosqueda, MD, interim dean of the Keck School, said in the release.

In addition to numerous awards and grants, Rao has authored nearly 500 peer-reviewed publications and six books on ophthalmic diseases, she added.

He also founded the Journal of Ophthalmic Inflammation and Infections and served as its first editor-in-chief.

“It is a great pleasure to lead the Department of Ophthalmology and continue its important mission of ending vision loss and blindness,” Rao said in the release. “I’m looking forward to working with the department’s exceptionally talented physicians, scientists, staff and students to make that goal a reality.”
