Cataract surgery training center opens in Paraguay

A new cataract surgery training center has been established by Zeiss, Christoffel-Blindenmission and Fundación Visión in Asunción, Paraguay, according to a press release.

Ophthalmologists will be trained in phacoemulsification at the center, to which Zeiss donated two phaco systems and two surgical microscopes.

“With this center we are jointly establishing ophthalmic care in the region that offers patients the greatest possible level of safety,” Christoffel-Blindenmission CEO Rainer Brockhaus, PhD, said in the release.

Zeiss and Christoffel-Blindenmission have provided equipment and training for the Fundación Visión eye clinic since 2013. While phacoemulsification has been in use in countries such as the United States and Germany for decades, it has been much slower to reach countries such as Paraguay, according to the release.

Fundación Visión will cover the costs of the treatment for patients who cannot afford it.
