ReVision Optics goes out of business

ReVision Optics, maker of the Raindrop near vision inlay, has folded, according to an announcement on the company’s website.
“It is with regret that we have to close our doors,” the announcement reads. “The Raindrop inlay will not be sold to ophthalmic practices or distributors as of Tuesday, January 30, 2018.”
The FDA approved the Raindrop inlay in June 2016, making it the second implantable corneal device for the correction of near vision in patients who have not had cataract surgery, and the first device to change the shape of the cornea to correct vision.
With the company’s closure, the Raindrop Rebate will no longer be honored, the announcement said.

AcuFocus, as the only other company with a corneal inlay approved by the FDA for presbyopia, thanked the team at ReVision for the work they it contributed to the field in a statement.
“We feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with their team over the years to build the market. Great strides have been made in that time, and we look forward to carrying the torch on in their honor as we continue to pioneer this segment,” the statement reads.

The closure of ReVision Optics is a real loss for the eye care specialty. As a user of its products and investigator for the past 10 years, I have been very pleased with the Raindrop inlay’s ability to restore reading vision in emmetropic presbyopic patients, including two close friends whom I have treated. I have also been very impressed with the company’s management team, so the company’s closure comes as a sad surprise.
For a company to succeed today, it must not only have a safe product that is FDA approved, but one that will sell in high numbers as well. Unfortunately, the adoption of corneal inlays by patients and surgeons in the bellwether U.S. market has been much slower than anticipated, possibly because of the high success of LASIK and premium cataract implants. Unfortunately, this lack of adoption has caused the loss of a company with an extremely valuable offering. I only hope the closure of ReVision Optics will not lessen the interest of investors in other worthwhile, new medical technologies.
