APAO 2018 Named Awards
The 33rd Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Congress will be held in Hong Kong from Feb. 8 to 11 at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. APAO is pleased to announce the recipients of the prestigious 2018 APAO Named Awards.
The 2018 Jose Rizal International Medal will be presented to Dr. Suber Huang of the United States. Dr. Huang is president and CEO of the Retina Center of Ohio and past president of the American Society of Retina Specialists. His award presentation, entitled “Innovation and Collaboration in Ophthalmology — Envisioning the Future,” is scheduled for the “Advancements in Technologies for Treatment” symposium on Feb. 9 from 14:30 to 16:00.
Dr. Yizhi Liu of China will deliver the 2018 De Ocampo Lecture. Dr. Liu is professor and director of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center at Sun Yat-sen University and director of the State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology. His award lecture on “Lens Regeneration Using Endogenous Stem Cells for Treatment of Congenital Cataract” will be part of the symposium entitled “Regenerative Medicine in Ophthalmology Using Stem Cells” on Feb. 9 from 9:00 to 10:30.
The 2018 Susruta Lecture will be presented by Dr. Pak-Chin Chow from Hong Kong. Dr. Chow is the immediate past president of the College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong and an honorary associate professor at both the University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His lecture entitled “Eradication of Cataract Blindness — An Impossible Dream?” is scheduled for Feb. 8 from 11:00 to 12:30 during the “Empowering Prevention of Blindness for Fighting Major Causes of Visual Impairment and Low Vision” symposium.
Finally, Dr. Paisan Ruamviboonsuk from Thailand will receive the 2018 Arthur Lim Award. Dr. Ruamviboonsuk serves on the APAO Council and the Asia-Pacific Vitreo-retina Society Council, and will also be President of the APAO 2019 Congress in Bangkok. His lecture on “Deep Learning for Diabetic Retinopathy Screening: Just the Tip of an Artificial Intelligence Iceberg in Ophthalmology and Medicine” will be featured in the “Diabetic Retinopathy and DME” symposium scheduled for Feb. 8 from 9:00 to 10:30.

What’s new at APAO 2018
For the first time at an APAO Congress, sponsored wet lab sessions are included in the program. With more than 20 courses on topics such as intravitreal injection, SMILE, phacoemulsification and more, the wet labs will offer delegates interactive hands-on experience from experts in the field. Furthermore, wet labs at APAO 2018 are free to all delegates.
New this year, the APAO Congress will present awards to outstanding abstracts in the submitted program. While the best free paper abstracts have already been selected, delegates can vote for their favorite posters, e-posters and videos during the Congress. Results will be announced during the Gala Dinner on Feb. 10.
In the Exhibition Hall, Congress organizers are pleased to welcome a unique display of artifacts from the Museum of Ophthalmology in China, which will be the first such exhibit at an APAO Congress. Additionally, Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis has organized a special symposium “A Potpourri of Ophthalmology Past and Future — Fact and Fiction” with intriguing topics, including the eyes of famous figures in history and mythology, as well as technology of the future.
Scientific sessions at the APAO 2018 Congress will be more interactive than ever before, thanks to new apps and mobile technology. Delegates will be able to submit questions or participate in audience polls during various symposiums, while session chairs can moderate responses and choose the most interesting and relevant questions to discuss.
Can’t make it to the many different sessions at APAO 2018? Don’t worry! New this year, delegates will be able to purchase access to video recordings of all symposiums after the Congress ends.
Additionally, five new APAO member societies will be participating in the APAO 2018 Congress. These include the following organizations from the Asia-Pacific region: Iranian Society of Ophthalmology, Myanmar Ophthalmological Society, Lao Ophthalmological Society (Associate Member), Pacific Eye Care Society (Associate Member) and Asia Pacific Ophthalmic Trauma Society (Associate Member).
