Lighthouse Guild recommends annual eye exams for glaucoma detection
January is Glaucoma Awareness Month in the United States, with organizations such as the Lighthouse Guild offering tips for detection of glaucoma, one of the leading causes of blindness in Americans older than 60 years.
The Lighthouse Guild, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting vision loss through vision and health services, says a regular annual eye exam is the best way to detect glaucoma.
“Comprehensive dilated eye exams can help detect glaucoma in its early stages, possibly preventing it from causing further harm and loss of vision,” the organization said in a press release.
Warning signs of glaucoma can include a subtle loss of contrast, difficulty driving at night and a progressive loss of peripheral vision, the release said.
