ASCRS Foundation names Alan Crandall, MD, humanitarian award winner

Alan S. Crandall

Alan S. Crandall, MD, will receive the inaugural Chang Humanitarian Award from the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Foundation, the organization announced.

Endowed by David F. Chang, MD, and his wife, Victoria, the Chang Humanitarian Award highlights outstanding humanitarian work in the area of cataract blindness.

“Alan has dedicated his career to humanitarian service, often in remote and sometimes dangerous parts of the world,” ASCRS Foundation board member Douglas D. Koch, MD, said. “His loving, generous spirit permeates all that he does, whether it be with patients, colleagues, students, friends or family.”

Crandall, who was one of 66 nominees, will be presented with the award at the 2018 ASCRS annual meeting in Washington, DC.

“[Crandall] embodies the compassion that we should all emulate, and his career has been defined by teaching, mentoring, and inspiring so many others while quietly tackling the most difficult cases in the most challenging of settings,” Chang said in the announcement.
