Zeiss introduces Veracity Surgical platform

NEW ORLEANS — Carl Zeiss Meditec introduced the Veracity Surgical platform, a cloud-based, intuitive cataract surgery planning program, during a company presentation preceding the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting.
“I have two full-time employees who would spend a day and a half planning my cases for the next week. Now we plan everything in front of the patients in real time. It saves me time and money, but there’s much more to it than that,” Kerry D. Solomon, MD, a co-founder of Veracity Surgical, said. “What does the patient get out of it? They’re more likely to achieve the vision they want. It allows for real-time planning, and that means a ton for the patients. I can sit there with a patient now and say, 'Mrs. Jones, this is what our plan is. You want to have distance and near? The plan is this.’ Patients have a lot more confidence knowing we can give them an answer right away.”
Solomon said a surgical plan previously would take 15 to 20 minutes per patient. Now, the program develops a cataract surgery plan in real time by integrating with electronic medical record systems and diagnostic devices. Surgeons can create customized, one-click plans based on the patient’s desired outcomes, Solomon said.
Veracity Surgical is a “simple, cloud-based solution that provides doctors and their teams exactly the information they need at each step in the clinical process so they can work more efficiently,” Jim Mazzo, global president ophthalmic devices at Carl Zeiss Meditec, said.
Also introduced was the newly released Clarus 500 ultra-widefield fundus imaging system. The system provides practitioners with images that more closely resemble the actual coloration of the retina and a view of the entire fundus.
“By offering true-color, high-resolution images of the optic nerve and macula, as well as the retinal periphery, we no longer have to choose which system to image a patient on based on their retinal pathology,” Roger Goldberg, MD, MBA, a retina specialist with Bay Area Retina Associates, said.
Additionally, Zeiss introduced the Humphrey Field Analyzer SITA Faster, which can reduce visual field testing time for glaucoma by 50%. Patients can complete testing with the SITA Faster in about 2 minutes, according to the company.
Zeiss also announced the international launch of several products, included the Opmi Lumera 700, an all-in-one cataract and retina, cornea and glaucoma surgery microscope, and the At Lara, an extended depth of focus IOL.
