Eric D. Donnenfeld

NEW ORLEANS — The latest peer-reviewed meta-analysis of worldwide scientific literature for LASIK shows the satisfaction rate for the procedure is up to 98% and nearly 90% of patients achieve 20/20 vision, according to a speaker here.

“Is LASIK the best refractive procedure? The jury is in, and the answer is yes. LASIK is the safest, most successful and most studied elective procedure in the world. It has the highest patient satisfaction rate, and it has continually improved over the last two decades. The best is LASIK, with our goal of continued improvement, and our goal is that 100% of patients that have LASIK have the same or better vision that they did prior to surgery,” Eric D. Donnenfeld, MD, said at Refractive Surgery Subspecialty Day preceding the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting.

Several studies have shown the efficacy of LASIK on improved vision outcomes, Donnenfeld said. The PROWL-1 study showed 97.5% of patients achieved 20/20 vision or better, while the PROWL-2 study showed 91.5% of patients achieved 20/20 vision or better.

The most intriguing aspect of LASIK is the prevalence of symptoms, he said.

Donnenfeld noted he previously would be concerned if patients had glare or halo before LASIK and that the symptoms would increase after surgery.

“In fact, the prevalence of glare and halo, ghosting and starbursting is less after LASIK with no correction than it was with patient’s best correction with glasses or contact lenses before. So, LASIK is actually a cure for ghosting, glare, halos and starbursting,” he said. – by Robert Linnehan
