Glistening-free hydrophobic IOL performs well in study

LISBON, Portugal — The new hydrophobic trifocal PhysIOL from FineVision provides the same outcomes of the previous hydrophilic model with the advantage of a glistening-free material, according to a study.
The glistening-free raw material was tested for more than 7 years, showing a low posterior capsular opacification rate and no glistening, Zoltan Nagy, MD, said at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting.
In a prospective, randomized, controlled study, 25 cataract patients were implanted with the hydrophobic PhysIOL POD F GF in one eye and the hydrophilic PhysIOL POD F in the contralateral eye.
IOL power calculation was performed with the Lenstar (Haag-Streit). Patients were mostly hyperopic presbyopic, and the residual sphere was intended slightly hyperopic in the dominant eye and slightly myopic in the nondominant eye
“The new IOL has the same trifocal optic design and only slightly different haptics, but the real difference is in the material,” Nagy said. “Implantation is easy and very similar to the other lens. It is inserted with a cartridge through a small incision, smoothly enters and unfolds in the eye.”
Over a follow-up of 6 months, visual acuity at 4 m, 70 cm and 35 cm, the defocus curve and contrast sensitivity were measured.
“Both trifocal lenses provided comparable, very good restoration of continuous visual acuity from near to far, and both showed good [contrast sensitivity], close to physiological values,” Nagy said. – by Michela Cimberle
