David Spalton

LISBON, Portugal — Fostering education, harmonization of curricula and international exchange is part of the mission of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, as David Spalton, MD, emphasized during his speech at the opening ceremony of the ESCRS meeting.

Chaired by Marie-José Tassignon, MD, PhD, the first European Board of Ophthalmology subspecialty examination for cataract and refractive surgery was held just before the beginning of the congress.

“We received over 80 applications, 33 candidates were selected to sit the exam and 15 passed it successfully, gaining the post-nominal title of FEBOS-CR: Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology Subspecialist in Cataract and Refractive Surgery,” Spalton said.

Another important initiative aimed at young ophthalmologists is the ESCRS Peter Barry Fellowship, launched last year “to commemorate the enormous contribution of the late Peter Barry to the ESCRS and global ophthalmology.” Peter Barry, Spalton said, was the driving force behind the ESCRS endophthalmitis prevention study.

“The fellowship is an award of 50,000 euros for a trainee to go anywhere in the world for 1 year to gain clinical or research experience. Not surprisingly, we had very strong applications,” Spalton said.

Winners this year were Miriam Böhm of Frankfurt, who will spend 1 year at Schepens Eye Research Institute in Massachusetts; Luis Fernández-Vega of Barcelona, who will spend 1 year at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Florida; and Nino Hirnschall of Vienna, who will spend 1 year at Sydney Eye Hospital in Australia. – by Michela Cimberle
