Last month we featured the Ophthalmological Society, Myanmar Medical Association, recently renamed as the Myanmar Ophthalmological Society, in OSN APAO Edition. In this issue, we continue our introduction to the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology’s new member societies with the Lao Ophthalmological Society.

With a total of 27 member ophthalmologists, Lao Ophthalmological Society (LOS) has joined APAO as an Associate Member Society. Currently, Prof. Vithoune Visonnavong is the president of LOS. Dr. Khamphoua Southisombath serves as vice president and Dr. Phetsamone Indara as secretary. Together they provided the following introduction to LOS.

“Established in 1990, the National Ophthalmology Centre is a renowned leading institution in Laos. We intend to move forward from the tertiary level of eye care to become an excellent center of eye care in the future. We place emphasis on public relations and promote health initiatives among citizens, as well as providing training for residents and ophthalmic nurses and teaching medical students from the University of Medical Sciences.

“LOS was established in 2006. LOS is a member of the Asian Ophthalmology Society and is also a member of the International Council of Ophthalmology. We are grateful for the opportunity to join APAO and look forward to successful collaboration and solidarity in the future.”
