Bausch + Lomb has launched its Stellaris Elite system for retina surgery in the United States, according to a company press release.

The Stellaris Elite offers vitrectomy cutters operating up to 7,500 cuts per minute and features a 27-gauge BiBlade vitrectomy cutter that can make up to 15,000 cuts per minute, the release said.

It has a dual light source, fiber optics and light-filtering technologies designed for small-gauge vitrectomy, as well as high-performance laser probes.

“The system offers leading-edge technologies and a broad range of options and accessories, making it an outstanding option for facilities and surgeons who are looking to enhance their surgical capabilities now and into the future,” Chuck Hess, vice president and general manager of U.S. Surgical at Bausch + Lomb, said in the release.

The Stellaris Elite also includes the Vitesse system, a hypersonic, 100% open-port vitrectomy platform that uses a localized tissue liquification zone to liquefy vitreous.

Vitesse will be available later this year, and a post-approval study was initiated in July. Hess called Vitesse the “first major vitreous removal innovation in 40 years,” in a letter posted to the company’s website.

“We are excited to embark on this new era of retina by helping to make surgery safer and more efficient than ever before,” he wrote in the letter.
