Last month, we featured the Iranian Society of Ophthalmology in OSN APAO Edition. We continue our introduction to the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology’s new member societies with the Ophthalmological Society, Myanmar Medical Association, or OSMMA.

Prof. Chaw Chaw Khaing is the current president of OSMMA, and she will also represent the society on the APAO Council. She has prepared the following overview detailing the history and activities of OSMMA.

“OSMMA was established in 1957 with the mission to upgrade and maintain the standard of eye care practice through provision of knowledge and training, to maintain and develop professional integrity and dignity, to promote continuing education and research in the field of ophthalmology, to collaborate and implement the activities of the national eye health plan and to inspire unity, friendship and cooperation among its members.

“The society holds the Myanmar Ophthalmological Conference annually. It also convenes a mid-year academic meeting every 2 years and organizes quarterly combined clinical meetings in teaching eye hospitals.

“It observes the annual WHO World Sight Day and World Glaucoma Week by holding public meetings and health talks, displaying posters and conducting free eye clinics and outreach surgery.

“Society membership grew to 345 ophthalmologists in 2016.”

Details of additional new APAO member societies will be available in future issues. For more information about APAO membership, please visit http://www.apaophth.org/members/.

7th Asia-Pacific Eye Care Week

We are pleased to announce that APAO is organizing its 7th Asia-Pacific Eye Care Week in the second week of October, from Oct. 9 to 15, in conjunction with World Sight Day 2017 on Oct. 12.

Asia-Pacific Eye Care Week

This year, the APAO Public Education Standing Committee partnered with the Central Secretariat to suggest two themes for the event: “What glaucoma patients need to know but were too afraid to ask” and “Retinoblastoma.” Two of APAO’s Subspecialty Member Societies, the Asia-Pacific Glaucoma Society and Asia-Pacific Society of Ocular Oncology and Pathology, will co-organize the 2017 Eye Care Week and help to produce a comprehensive set of educational materials and a media kit, which will be available on the APAO website in September. Member societies are invited to use the reference materials for public educational purposes during the 7th Asia-Pacific Eye Care Week. For ideas on educational or service activities that can be held during Eye Care Week, take a look at reports from previous events.

Any APAO member societies that participate in the 7th Asia-Pacific Eye Care Week are encouraged to submit photos and highlights of their activities to the Central Secretariat via email at sydneystonner@apaophth.org. These reports will be featured on the APAO website and in other APAO publications.
