New extended depth of focus IOL design offers good MTF over wide dioptric interval

Results for a new aspheric IOL with double spherical aberration in the central 3-mm pupil aperture zone suggest the lens provides good visual acuity between 4 m and 50 cm, according to a study.

The Mini WELL IOL (SIFI) is an extended depth of focus IOL with no diffractive rings that was tested at the optical bench for depth of focus and sensitivity to tilt, decentration and angle kappa, with visual acuity simulations ranging from 4 m to 50 cm. Results suggested good visual acuity up to 2 D of pseudoaccommodation and favored distance vision at a 4.5-mm pupil aperture.

“It was our specific concern to introduce apodization to avoid distance vision problems under scotopic conditions. In addition, the limited variation of SA should induce less halo and glare in eyes with IOLs implanted than if the variation would extend beyond the 3-mm central zone,” the authors wrote.

The modulation transfer function (MTF) was 0.25 to 0.30 for intermediate and near vision and was 0.35 to 0.40 for distance vision for a 3-mm pupil. For a 4.5-mm pupil, the MTF was 0.40 to 0.55 for distance vision and 0.10 to 0.20 for intermediate and near vision. MTF was not affected by tilt of ±2.5°, decentration up to ±0.5 mm or angle kappa up to 9°.

“The through-focus MTF result with angle kappa variation is extremely important in our opinion because its invariance with angle kappa variation from 0° to 5° and 9° may indicate that this lens will provide good results in patients with hyperopia who usually

have nasal fixation,” researchers wrote in the study.
