The United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued a patent for an implantable IOL that includes a video camera and LED display, as well as a communications module that wirelessly transmits and receives information from an external device, according to a press release from Strathspey Crown LLC.

Strathspey Crown’s patent is the first to be issued in the “ocular smart implant category,” despite similar applications from Samsung, Sony and Google, Robert Edward Grant, founder and chairman of Strathspey Crown, said in the release. The camera-integrated acrylic IOL will be completed in 2018, and the firm plans to pursue an FDA investigational device exemption, premarket approval and a clinical trial.

“This patent represents a significant step forward in the rapidly growing sector of human cyborg technology,” Grant said in the release. “The eye, as a transparent medium for light, is ideal for advanced and rechargeable implantables that enable video capture of all of life’s experiences.”
