BLOG: The power and pleasure of networking through OWL
In today’s rapidly changing health care environment, success depends not only on effective business execution, but also on our interpersonal skills inside and outside our organizations. Networking is key. Our ability to gather supportive people together to share strengths brings opportunities and even joy to our work.
I have a long career in ophthalmology. After a recent health absence, I returned with renewed enthusiasm to bring value to my work and be of service to all participants in this incredible medical field. I was excited to become a member of OWL because the group’s mission resonated with me. I want to embrace diversity in order to create unity. I believe that we must first understand ourselves before we can understand others. There is much to be said and gained by appreciating our differences, and much to be lost by ignoring them. Finally, I believe that working together, we can all embody the changes we promote. (As I like to say, “Difference you can see. Difference you can be.”)
I have volunteered to build a strong organization through the OWL membership committee group, and I encourage colleagues to come join our network so we can all participate. This network means a great deal to me, and I know it means a great deal to you, too. I will leave you with this quote that I keep in mind in my work every day, including the work I do to support my colleagues and advance OWL’s mission:
“Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world.”
– Joel Arthur Baker
