July is Dry Eye Awareness Month, when physicians and agencies aim to increase awareness of the condition, which affects millions of Americans.

In recent years, dry eye disease has increasingly become a priority as studies have been conducted and pharmaceuticals developed to combat its effects.

Here are five important recent advancements in dry eye disease care from Healio.com.

1. Lifitegrast improved dry eye signs, symptoms in five trials

Adults with dry eye disease were assigned to lifitegrast or placebo in five randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled trials, which found the drug to improve dry eye symptoms. Read more here.

2. Meibomian glands reduced after 3 minutes of intranasal tear neurostimulation

Research presented at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology annual meeting showed intranasal tear neurostimulation may have a significant effect on meibomian gland morphology. Read more here.
