LOS ANGELES — Kerry D. Solomon, MD, ended his year-long presidency of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and welcomed Bonnie An Henderson, MD, to take his place as the next ASCRS president.
“No other organization comes close to what ASCRS can offer, but I want to build on what has been done and continue to grow this educational resource,” Henderson said at the ASCRS meeting.

Henderson touted ASCRS as the best ophthalmology group in the country and the importance of continuing its educational mission for anterior segment surgeons worldwide.
For the next year, ASCRS has planned to conduct a prospective, large-scale study of intracameral antibiotics to investigate their effectiveness in preventing endophthalmitis. Such a large-scale study would be prohibitive for independent investigators and too expensive for industry to tackle alone. If ASCRS can pull together the work of its members, then the investigation could be conducted, Henderson said.
“If this study corroborates the findings of previous studies that intracameral antibiotics significantly decrease the incidence of endophthalmitis after cataract surgery, then we hope that this study will help in expediting the development of a commercially available and FDA-approved intracameral antibiotic. This would benefit all patients undergoing cataract surgery,” Henderson said.
Additionally, ASCRS will continue to advocate on behalf of its ophthalmologists for any future legislation that may have “unforeseen and potentially harmful consequences to our patients and doctors’ practices.”
“We physicians have the opportunity to try to make changes in health care delivery. By collaborating with other ophthalmic and surgical organizations, we can present a unified voice in Washington to roll back the multitudes of regulations that are encumbering our ability to care for our patients,” Henderson said. – by Robert Linnehan
