The Argus II retinal prosthesis system has been implanted in the first patient in Asia at the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan, according to a Second Sight press release.

Argus II, which provides electrical stimulation of viable retinal cells to induce visual perception in patients with profound retinitis pigmentosa, has been previously approved and offered in several countries worldwide, including the U.S., as well as Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom.

The system was made available for use in Asia through a partnership between Second Sight and Orient Europharma Co. Ltd., along with charitable support from the Hong-Lu Foundation in Taiwan.

“We are very pleased to expand the availability of the Argus II to Asia as we continue to offer our technology to patients with retinitis pigmentosa, providing them with the potential opportunity to lead more independent lives,” Will McGuire, president and CEO of Second Sight, said in the release.
