OCT-based scanned capsule centration for femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery provided better overlap between the IOL and lens capsule than pupil centration with a three-piece IOL, according to a study.

The prospective, randomized clinical trial included 160 patients who underwent femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery. The patients were split into four groups: OCT-based scanned capsule centration (SCC) with three-piece IOL; SCC with plate-haptic IOL; pupil centration (PC) with three-piece IOL; or PC with plate-haptic IOL. Each of the four treatment groups included 40 patients, and there were no significant differences in ages.

All patients in the SCC with three-piece IOL, SCC with plate-haptic IOL and PC with plate-haptic IOL groups experienced a 360° overlap. However, three patients in the PC with three-piece IOL group did not have a complete overlap.

In addition, researchers calculated the best capsulotomy diameter to be used with the procedures.

“The new SCC method helps to achieve a 360° overlap in all eyes independent of the IOL type. A 5.1-mm capsulotomy was the largest capsulotomy diameter that still achieved a 360° overlap in all eyes,” the study authors wrote. – by Robert Linnehan
