Carl Zeiss Meditec reports €280 million in first quarter revenue

Carl Zeiss Meditec reported a 6.6% increase in revenue to €280 million in the first quarter of its 2016-2017 fiscal year, compared with €262.2 million in the same quarter a year ago, according to a company press release.
Earnings before interest and taxes increased to €44.2 million from €32.2 million, which was attributed to capital gains from asset sales.
Quarterly earnings per share went up from €0.21 to €0.38.
Revenue in the ophthalmic devices unit increased from €191.3 million a year ago to €207.6 million this quarter, a rise of 8.5%, while revenue in the microsurgery unit increased by 1.6% from €71.3 million to €72.4 million.
In the Asia-Pacific region, revenue increased 26.6% from €83.6 million to €105.8 million, attributed to the Chinese market and Southeast Asia and India. The Europe-Middle East-Africa region experienced a 7.2% decrease in revenue from €90.2 million to €83.7 million, attributed to decreased business in the United Kingdom, Southern Europe and the Middle East. In the Americas region, revenue increased by 1.9% from €88.8 million to €90.5 million.
