The 32nd Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Congress will be held from March 1 to 5 at Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre in Singapore, co-hosted by the Singapore Society of Ophthalmology and College of Ophthalmologists, Academy of Medicine Singapore, and co-organized with the International Council of Ophthalmology.

The Opening Ceremony of APAO 2017 will be held on Thursday, March 2, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Hall 405BX at Suntec Convention and Exhibition Centre. In addition to a special performance, the Opening Ceremony will feature the presentation of four important APAO Named Awards: Jose Rizal Medal, APAO Mark Tso Golden Apple Award, Holmes Lecture and Nakajima Award.

The two APAO Plenary Sessions are scheduled for before and after the Opening Ceremony. During the first session, from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Prof. Chorh Chuan Tan will present the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis lecture entitled “Transforming Health Systems for the Future.” In the second session, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., Prof. Robert Ritch will deliver the College of Ophthalmologists lecture entitled “The Coming of Age of Exfoliation Syndrome.”

The Gala Dinner and Speakers’ Reception at APAO 2017 will be held on Friday, March 3, at Gardens by the Bay, one of Singapore’s most unique attractions that consists of three indoor waterfront gardens located on 101 hectares of land adjacent to the harbor. Guests will be served a 4-course Chinese fusion meal inside the Flower Field Hall in the Flower Dome, which offers a periodically changing display as well as wonderful views of the city evening skyline.

Recipients of the 2017 APAO Distinguished Service Awards, Outstanding Service in Prevention of Blindness Awards and Achievement Awards will be recognized at the Gala Dinner, along with recipients of the 2017 APAO Prof. Yasuo Tano Travel Grants.

Entry into the Gala Dinner at APAO 2017 is for ticketed guests only. Delegates who wish to attend the event can purchase tickets in advance online through the APAO Congress system at congress.apaophth.org. Tickets can also be purchased on site during the Congress. Tickets for the Gala Dinner cost US$100.

Participants will join a 3.8-km run along the beautiful Singapore harbor front.

For the second year in a row, there will be a charity run during the APAO Congress. On Saturday morning, March 4, participants will join a 3.8-km run along the beautiful Singapore harbor front. Each participant is committed to raising at least US$100, which will go toward Guide Dogs Association of the Blind in Singapore and the APAO International Fellowship Program. More information and entry forms will soon be available on the APAO Congress website.

All young ophthalmologist (YO) delegates (residents, fellows and consultants practicing for less than 5 years) and APAO Leadership Development Program (LDP) alumni and current participants are welcome to attend the YO Night at APAO 2017, which will be held on Saturday, March 4, from 6 p.m. to 8 pm at The Armoury, a gastropub just a 5- to 10-minute walk from the Congress venue.

The YO Night at APAO 2017 is organized by the APAO YO and LDP committees and the Singapore Society of Ophthalmology, and is generously sponsored by Zeiss Singapore. This event is a perfect opportunity to mingle and network with colleagues from around the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

10th APVRS Congress

The 10th Asia-Pacific Vitreo-retina Society (APVRS) Congress, in conjunction with the 38th Annual Meeting of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists of Thailand (RCOPT), was held from Dec. 8 to 10, 2016, in Bangkok, Thailand. More than 1,300 delegates from many countries attended the event.

After the Congress Opening Ceremony on Dec. 8, Prof. Xiaoxin Li, immediate past president of APVRS, presented the APVRS Tano Lecture, which was established in 2009 in memory of APVRS Founding President, Prof. Yasuo Tano.

Two additional special lectures were presented at the 10th APVRS Congress. Dr. Jay Chhablani, a consultant at the LV Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad, India, delivered the inaugural APVRS Constable Lecture, which was created in honor of former APVRS President Prof. Ian Constable (APVRS President, 2009 to 2013). Prof. R.V. Paul Chan, vice chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Illinois, Chicago, USA, was awarded the RCOPT Rutnin Lecture from RCOPT and the Thai Retina Society.
