KOLOA, Hawaii — After 25 years of attending and presenting at Hawaiian Eye, renowned speaker Alan E. Reider, JD, MPH, announced his retirement here at the conclusion of his Hawaiian Eye 2017 presentation on compliance.

Reider thanked the individuals he has shared the podium with at Hawaiian Eye.

“You are in great hands with all these folks,” he assured the audience. “They know what they are doing, and they will give you the guidance that you need.”

“I want to thank Dr. Lindstrom who first introduced me [to Hawaiian Eye] and who was so gracious. And Dr. Puliafito and Dr. Corboy,” Reider said. “Their vision – and I do mean that in every sense of the word – has been extraordinary.”

“The folks at Vindico, Peter Slack, John Carter, Robin Simon, they have been wonderful. They are so professional. They do a great, great job. You have no idea how difficult it is. I have no idea how difficult it is to run this meeting,” he said.

Then, Reider thanked the audience.

“I want to thank you. You have been remarkable in your attention that you have given to me. I know my message has not always been the most pleasant to hear. And not the most upbeat,” Reider said. “You have been very, very gracious and very patient with everything I have said. And I have tremendous respect for you.”

“What you do is amazing. You have such great gifts and such great talent,” he said.

The audience returned the appreciation and thanks by giving Reider a long standing ovation.

“I would like to both thank and congratulate Alan Reider on his contributions over the last 25 years, not just to Ocular Surgery News and our meetings, but also to ophthalmology as a whole,” said Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, chief medical editor of Ocular Surgery News and a leader of the Hawaiian Eye Program Committee. “He has been an objective, critical evaluator of what’s going on in Washington, always advocating for ophthalmology and ophthalmologists. He has also been a fantastic educator. He has educated in our periodical, OSN, he has also educated at our meetings in Hawaii and New York. And we want to thank him.”

“Alan has been a stellar partner not only with Hawaiian Eye but all of our meetings and Ocular Surgery News for many years. His ability to communicate complicated issues of concern to MDs has made him a very special and much anticipated speaker,” said Peter N. Slack, President & CEO of the Wyanoke Group, parent company of SLACK Incorporated and Ocular Surgery News.
